Billions of people reside on our planet. They reside at different locations facing different geographical, climatic & environment conditions. All are leading their own lives. The lives could be smooth or crisis ridden. Every individual traverses a specific, peculiar path in this journey of life. On the same planet people think, speak, act, behave & live so differently.
Medical science would explain some of these differences through genetic traits. However, going beyond the outcome of different kinds of genes, even with in similar cultures, similar living conditions & similar environment, different people live different lives in terms of social standing, occupation, level of earning and the life style. People exhibit these differences in their habits, styles, attitudes, behaviors, actions & reactions.
Religions, scriptures & spiritual leaders would explain the differences by talking about Karma. According to that belief our past deeds, even those committed in the past life, if there was one, beget us the commensurate results. Our good deeds bring us rewards and our sinful acts would unleash terrible times to make us repent. Hence, different people tread differently through life to undergo different experiences as per their past deeds.
All may not subscribe to this school of thought. In addition to other differences people would obviously have differences in their belief systems too. Despite whatever belief system we follow, we cannot deny the fact that there are gaps in every society in terms of social and economic standings. People tend to benefit differently even for comparable efforts and sometimes go through hardships due to situations and circumstances not entirely of their own making.
People generally exhibit a strange trait. If we are happy and successful we feel excited and tend to give all the credit to self. We would not mind boasting about it saying, “I did this”. If we fail in an endeavour or are in a crisis, we can find innumerable excuses to explain the failure with a ready stock of ‘luck’, ‘fate’ & destiny to point our blaming fingers at.
If success is mine how come failure is due to something else? Either both are mine or both are not mine.
As we grow up, we keep acquiring knowledge, skills, capabilities, resources & wisdom to perform various tasks in life. But the results are not always to our satisfaction. A batsman scores a century in one match but gets out at duck in the other. Not that the second time he did not know how to play. Then why this difference in the end result?
Technically, we can explain the different scores by elaborating the differences in the playing conditions on the two occasions. However, if you ask a serious batsman he would honestly keep pondering over why he could not score even one run in the second match.
To act & perform is in our control, what we gain through that act & performance is beyond our control. Hence, to act and perform is our Karma. What accrues to us through that is our Destiny.
Supposing you are looking for a job. Submitting a good resume, preparing well for the interview, presenting yourself nicely at the appointed time and doing your best in giving appropriate answers is your Karma. You have no control over the mind & the thinking of the interviewer. He gives you a selection note or a regret letter, becomes your destiny.
You are scheduled to fly out for a meeting. You have arranged the air ticket in advance. You have made a very meticulous plan, taking care of all your personal necessities & the requirements of the meeting. You reach the airport at the scheduled time, only to find that the flight is delayed or, worse, is cancelled. Do you have the control over the flight operations? It flies out in time, or is delayed or cancelled is the karma of the airline staff. But for you it turns out to be your destiny.
Take the case of the recent airplane crash of Air France airbus 330, that plunged into the Atlantic ocean on June1, 2009, killing all the 228 people aboard. The passengers never planned & acted to make the accident happen. They had only prepared to undertake the journey which turned out to be their final journey of life. This also brought unexpected suffering to the kith & kin of the passengers. A sorry end designed by destiny.
In contrast, an Air France airbus 340 overshot the runway, following a storm, at Toronto airport in August 2005. It plunged into a wooded ravine. All 309 passengers & crew made it out of the plane before it burst into flames. No one died in that crash, only 43 minor injuries were reported. An outcome that brought much pleasant relief to the passengers as well as their kith and kin.
History is replete with examples of discoveries made by chance. Penicillin, X-rays, Microwave Ovens, Calorie free sweetener, Dynamite, Safety Glass, Botox, Cellophane & Vulcanized Rubber are all examples of such discoveries. No doubt that people who placed these discoveries before the world had the thoughtful & receptive minds to exploit the useful incidents & information that unfolded before them. But the fact remains that all these were serendipities.
It is also interesting to observe that many of these discoveries did not bring the expected rewards to the discoverers. Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanized rubber, but he died a pauper where as his discovery struck millions for others.
The recent economic crises in US spelt trouble for exporters in India & China. The meltdown caused thousands of people to lose their jobs. Millions others lost their money in the stock market. The recessionary trend spread to many parts of the world. It affected the demand and productions were curtailed, resulting into losses to the entrepreneurs. Huge investments made in real estate suddenly turned out to be blood sucking, pushing some people to commit suicides.
The economic crisis in US was not designed by exporters in India and China. Neither the meltdown was brought about by people who lost their jobs.
Dr. Hargobind Khurana could not get a job in India on his return in 1949 after doing his Ph. D. in Britain. He went back to Cambridge, worked in different countries and many years later was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in 1968.
Adolf Hitler wanted to be an Architect. But he could not clear the entrance exam at the school of architect in Vienna. The first world war brought fresh opportunities for him and the man later became the most powerful Nazi Dictator.
Good times or bad times, smooth sailing or turbulent ride, there s
eems to be a certain pattern that keeps unfolding various events in the lives of the people. We think and act as per our strength and capabilities but the results are not always as per our desires. Something else comes into play.
So, even in the most demanding situation keep your nerves and try to put your best foot forward. Just remember that we intend a design, but destiny tends to re-design.
I often think of my past and use it as a means to analyze where I am and where I want to get to. Where I struggle is balancing it all out. How do you guys balance things out?
