The Dual Core

Every human being is a mix of good & evil, virtue & vice, compassion & cruelty, love & hate, empathy & antipathy, amity & enmity, tenacity & timidity and so on. At different times, different traits overpower & overshadow the others to give a specific hue to the personality of an individual. Due to the rise & fall of the specific traits, every person presents a varying picture of personality in varying situations. This is also the reason why the same person is perceived & received differently by different people.

Goswami Tulsidas, the famous poet & saint of the 16th century, has written in Sunderkand,  Sumati kumati sab ke ur rahehin” meaning that all human beings, by their very nature, have a dual character. It is only that under different circumstances, an individual, knowingly or unknowingly, allows greater domination to one side of the character that becomes one’s ‘image’ in the minds of the people then witnessing the actions of the individual. Thus, everyone has to exercise total control on oneself, on physical, mental & emotional levels, to allow only the brighter side to flourish. When one loses control, it becomes easier for the darker side to take predominance & a very atrocious kind of personality sprouts.

The grey traits of human beings are visible at all ages. A fifteen month old toddler of my niece broke the reading glasses of his grandmother. Pretending to be annoyed when the grandmother questioned him, “Who broke these?”, the toddler stretched out both his hands & shrugged his shoulders as if to convey, “ I do not know”.

A nearly three years old kid was seen making all the strange & funny excuses for avoiding going to school that day.

No one taught the toddler & the kid to come out with these kinds of innovations. These are the inherent latent qualities that surfaced under pressure situations. Telling lies is one of the commonest grey traits the human beings are endowed with.

We come across stories of many celebrities, people in power, priests & mentors and other famous personalities who, in their weaker moments, succumbed to their grey traits and acted in a manner that spelled doom for their illustrious reputations. The subjects of such stories traverse a wide spectrum from shop lifting, child abuse, secret flings, misuse of authority & other unbecoming acts for personal gains.

There are also cases where people made conscious efforts to shed their grey traitdual-cores & light up their golden characteristics for a complete personality makeover. There are people who were not at all good at studies in their school & college days; were always on the wrong side of the rules, but later in life changed their styles to acquire better academic qualifications & did exceedingly well in their professional careers.

In a tribal belt in Madhya Pradesh, India, many members of the ‘Bhil’ tribe were habitually drunkards and would kill friends & relatives on trifling issues. With a little effort & help from social reformers these people have cast aside their previous mould & have started leading normal, pious life.

A grown up mind has to be strong willed to always choose the right path. A wavering mind would have a chance to flounder. For choosing the right path, one has to consciously make a judicious choice with a serene mind, without listening to sentiments & emotions.

In difficult situations, the advice of mentors & suggestions of peers have to be weighed with clear perceptions. A virtuous advice may appear bitter to swallow, whereas a seemingly favourable suggestion could be nothing more than flattery.

History reveals that famous characters like Florence Nightingale, Mahatma Gandhi, Adolf Hitler, Emperor Akbar & Mother Teresa, to name a few, successfully worked on their self-chosen traits to strongly bring forth a kind of personality that they wanted to project on to their fellow human beings & followers.  In doing so, they successfully drove some other traits into dormant shells.

A conscious & determined effort by an individual to nurture & flourish the desired, selected traits lends a solid color to the personality of the individual; a personality which is recognized & accepted uniformly by a very large number of people. The consistent empowerment of either golden or grey traits of a person develops the corresponding long lasting hue of the character of the individual. The choice, therefore, is solely our own.
